The Lawrence Township Winter Percussion group has just started its second season. Senior Donovan McDuffy from LC is looking forward for another year as a part of the group.

“I’m really excited about this season. We have a lot of new, experienced staff and they are constantly pushing the ensemble to be the best it can be. We also have a new and improved attitude throughout the entire ensemble since it is our second year. I believe we have potential to do even better this year,” McDuffy said.

Their director, Nathan Bushey, talks about how every year each group chooses a theme and how their show revolves around it. There are also many different groups that can be part of the high school or just independent groups. LTWP is going this year to Nationals for the first time.

“This year our theme is called ‘Spin Art’ and it’s all about different things that spin, just different artistic takes on it. So, we use different size frisbees in the show, we spin kid, there’s a girl that gets thrown up and spins on the floor. We spin drums, we spin everything. The tarp is oval so the pit goes around that in a circle, and that’s what our show is about. There’s a ton of different groups in the area, high schools that do it, there’s independent groups, it’s all up to age 22 I think. This is our first year that we are going to the national championship, which is in April,” Bushey said.

Soon, after the month of December learning the basics of the technique and working in the first part of their show, starting with the music and the drill, they have their first performance and following it, they will have their first actual competition.
“February 13th is our Friends and Family show and February 20th is our first real competition,” McDuffy said.
