Recently English teachers and Wildcat Media students collaborated to create “READ” posters to encourage reading around the school. The posters can be found in the school library and in the participating English teachers classrooms.
English teacher Kameron McBride brought the idea to school, which he based on an American Library Association campaign in the ‘80s and ‘90s featuring celebrities and cartoons.
McBride thought it would be a fun thing for the department to do together at the start of the year.
“We obviously want to encourage kids to read, and it’s a cool, vintage way to celebrate it together,” he said.
McBride contacted Wildcat Media to help make the posters happen. Two students, seniors Haylee Boyles and Brendyn Bartlett, coordinated with teachers to get the project done.
“Getting (the photos) done, then putting those into Photoshop and editing it, making sure it fits and looks good, then turning them into a file type so they could be printed out properly, that was really about it,” Boyles said. “I think that overall they turned out pretty amazing.”
`English teacher Joseph Morris was happy with the results as well.
“I think most of us wanted our posters to be humorous but also to show our love of reading. I think mine conveys both of those sentiments,” Morris said.
“I love to read. I read every day on my own. The reason mine is funny is because if you look at it, you’ll see that I’m telling a student to wait while I read a book. I would never do that in reality or in real life, but you know, I do love to read,” he said.
McBride was pleased with the finished product also.
“I think they’re all creative and show off the individual likes of each teacher who did it,” he said.
English teachers are displaying their posters in their classrooms, and also the library has copies that they will be hanging up throughout this school year.
