Football vs. Brownsburg: Game Recap

Football+vs.+Brownsburg%3A+Game+Recap

It was another weather delayed game for the football team last Friday as they took on top quarterback Hunter Johnson and the Brownsburg Bulldogs. The Wildcats were coming off a game on August 19 against Noblesville which was delayed until around 8 p.m. After the delays were lifted, LN was eventually victorious 21-17 against the Millers. Stormy weather and lightning in the area once again lead to this week’s matchup being postponed until around 8:45.

Last season saw these two teams compete in a barn burner in which the Cats’ came out on top 65-47 on their home turf. This season though, was a totally different tale as the two teams only combined for 21 total points in a low scoring matchup at Brownsburg.

Senior Elijah Smith lead the way for the Wildcats as he rushed 14 times, one being a touchdown and gained 149 yards on the ground. Martell Williams had another strong showing as he rushed for 64 yards on 12 carries.

For Brownsburg, two main players highlighted the stat sheet for the Bulldogs. Quarterback Hunter Johnson passed for 15 completions and 182 yards and two touchdowns on the night. Johnson even showed he has some legs as he rushed for 119 yards on the night. RB Carson Gills provided a boost for the Bulldog offense as he rushed for 48 yards on the night.

Senior running back Elijah Smith busted out of the gate for the Wildcat offense as he scored a 70 yard touchdown on the very first drive. Senior Kicker Sam Ellsworth missed the extra point, but the Wildcats still held the lead 6-0 early in the first quarter. For the moment, the Wildcats looked to be on their way to a second straight win against the Brownsburg, as they were clicking on all cylinders.

Ironically, the only scoring play after Smith’s touchdown was scored on a sack from junior Chauncey Mays, halfway through the third quarter. The Wildcats fumbled the ball twice and were picked off once, which was a big reason why the WIldcats faltered in a chance to improve to 2-0.

Senior LB Maliq Carr continued to put the momentum on the Wildcats side as midway through the second as he intercepted a deflected pass from QB Hunter Johnson.

Brownsburg put their first points on the board after a Lawrence North fumble late in the first half which was recovered by the Bulldogs. Hunter Johnson put Brownsburg in scoring position as he completed a 34 yard pass to Leigh Nutall. Johnson later threw for his first touchdown of the game on a one yard dish to Antrez Baker.

After the safety from Mays, the Wildcats lead 8-7 halfway through the third quarter.

After a punt hit the back of a Lawrence North player, the Brownsburg kicking team recovered the ball at the Wildcats’ 6. Later that drive, Johnson connected with Johnson as Hunter Johnson passed to Eli Johnson on the second passing touchdown of the night for Hunter. Brownsburg took the lead for good as they went on to defeat LN 13-8. The Wildcats will take on rivals LC this Friday at 8 p.m. under the lights at Lucas Oil Stadium.
