Chemistry teacher Jason Floyd takes over as IB coordinator

North Star: Why did you decide to become the new IB coordinator?

Floyd: One reason is I am currently working on my administration degree. So I’m looking for leadership positions, and IB coordinator is a leadership position in our building. Secondly I’m an IB teacher, so I’ve been a part of the IB program for a while. It was a two for one.

NS: What’s your experience with the IB program?

Floyd: This will be about five to six years now that I’ve teaching IB Chemistry, and that’s been my big thing. I’ve just been teaching IB Chemistry.

NS: What are your plans for the IB program this year?

Floyd: My plans are to learn the program, learn more about the program as a whole and bring my skills as an organizer and instructor to it. And hopefully give that to the teachers and the students and help them succeed at getting their diplomas.

NS: How different and alike are you planning on making the IB program this year from past years?

Floyd: I don’t have too many things for changing it up right now because I’m still learning all the processes. I’m just learning how it runs right now and tweaking things as I go and maybe thinking of possible changes for the years to come.

NS: How long are your expecting to be the IB coordinator?

Floyd: Don’t know. It’s a new job with a lot of stuff and there’s no expiration date on this, it’s a lot of variables on that question.

NS: Had you thought of being the IB coordinator before [former IB coordinator Melody] Coryell left?

Floyd: No, I hadn’t thought about it before. Before this, the IB coordinators were sort of sought out in the past and I was just more wanting to teach and be a teacher in the IB program. I had never wanted to be the IB coordinator. The most I ever wanted be was, at one point I wanted to be the ToK teacher.
