LN welcomes perspective students at open house

Lawrence North is holding an open house Nov. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. for anyone who would like to tour LN. The open house is being held so students and families that will be attending Lawrence Township schools can have a better understanding of what to expect when they attend. Also because Lawrence Township schools have open borders, families can choose other schools and students from other schools can choose LN. For example, Fall Creek Valley Middle School is the main feeder school into LN, but 17% of the current freshman class did not attend FCV last year.

This year we hope to offer information sessions on transitioning from a small private school to a large public high school for those interested families,” Freshman Assistant Principal Brian Atkinson said.

Sophomore Camille Lander is participating as a volunteer for the open house. She will be showing incoming freshmen around and explaining electives they can participate in during their high school years.

“It’s a really good opportunity from incoming freshmen. I’m working with Ms. Britton to help students and parents understand what we have to offer,” Lander said.

The open house is an opportunity for parents who are unsure about what school they want their child to attend and they can talk to teachers, counselors, administrators, coaches and anyone else associated with the school. There will be many opportunities for parents who do not speak English to take tours of the school in Spanish. NSHS students will be acting as translators at the open house walking parents through what their students could participate in.

“The idea was brought to me by a student. We have many Spanish-speaking families in our district. It just made sense to have that option for those families,” Atkinson said.

At the same time the open house is going on, girls’ basketball takes on Noblesville at 7 p.m. Admission is free, and the team will receive their state runner-up rings that night.

Lawrence North hopes to expose students to diversity so it can help them in the real world and get students prepared for real life after their time after Lawrence North. Many performing arts students will show their talents and artists will be working on paintings in the hallways, showing the incoming freshman what we have to offer for their passions. One of our goals is to keep our Fall Creek Valley students because we know that students that graduate from Lawrence North stay in our community or come back to our community after college and positively impact the city of Lawrence,” Atkinson said.
