BSU hosted their annual Black History Month convocation today during G2. Students and faculty were invited to come and listen to celebrations of the culture and significance of black history. The convo opened with senior My’Kell Davis singing “Lift Every Voice & Sing,” the Black National Anthem. Then, junior Janaya Brown, president of BSU, along with advisers Charles Cameron and Simon Hart welcomed everyone to the auditorium. Cameron mentioned that the theme of this year’s Black History Month is “The Evolution of the Black Community through perseverance.” This idea could be seen throughout the event. The intermediate dance class performed, followed by the Gospel Choir. There was also a special presentation by freshman Kenice McTush, who read a poem. The main speaker for the convo, Dr. Ken Sullivan, spoke about resilience and resourcefulness, explaining the black history is steeped in these ideals. Finally, two BSU officers, junior Paul Moore and senior Ayden Trabue, reflected on the month’s theme of “Evolution,” before the advanced dance team took the stage. The gospel choir sang one more time before the convo closed by acknowledging the BSU officers’ work in making the program happen and sending Dr. Sullivan off with some LN gear as a thank you for being a part of this year’s event.
