The Lady Wildcats made it to Gainbridge Fieldhouse to fight for the state title. It was their first time back since they took home the trophy in 2020. They fought a hard game against Warsaw Community High School and won 65-59. The Lady Cats were up by 9 points at the end of the second quarter. Just after the start of halftime, Warsaw went on a shooting run, but the girls continued to fight and play hard to keep their lead. They held on throughout the fourth quarter to secure the state title.
“This feels amazing, like a dream come true,” senior Jamaya Thomas said. “This feels very surreal in a very amazing moment, and I will remember this for the rest of my life.”
This year’s championship was during the 50th year anniversary of the girls state tournament, which makes the win even more special. This is Head Coach Stephen Thomas’ second title win within five years, but his first win as the head coach. He was an assistant coach on the 2020 team that won. Lawrence North was 10-8 after a loss to Big Walnut, Ohio, but after that loss, the Wildcats didn’t lose another game all season, finishing 19-8. This makes them the first team from class of 4a to ever win a state championship without winning at least 20 games in a season.
