SAT Day for Lawrence North is Wednesday, March 4th. 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students will be expected to engage in asynchronous e-learning for the day, only 11th grade students will have to show up on this day. Every 11th grade student has to take the SAT on this day, many people are aware of this, but are the students aware about what they are and why they have to take it?
Junior Principal Reginald Simmons says the test is state mandated, but that does not mean that there aren’t still benefits to taking it.
“So one is that it helps you if you’re college bound, for example it kinda helps you understand and prepare for the rigor of college, but there’s also scholarships that can be tied to it as well, depending on your score and it can also help you with your entrance” Simmons said.
Simmons also talks about benefits and the importance of taking the SAT even if you aren’t college bound.
“And besides if your not college bound, the SAT is still important because it helps you assess where your skill level is at, depending on whatever you want to do after you graduate from high school, so that will give you a good idea, for example man I’m really good at math, but not so much in English, maybe you want to pursue a career where you know math would be something you would have to have a good aptitude for and vice verse” Simmons said.
“They will need their chromebooks, they will need to have the BlueBook app downloaded, I’m thinking it’s already on most, they will need a pencil and they will need a calculator” Simmons said.
Simmons says that teachers do a pretty good job of making sure that they’re reviewing, not necessarily preparing for the test, but reviewing the skills that may be needed to do well on the SAT. Then, he talks about how he thinks students should be prepared for SAT day.
“I’m going to say something a little different. You know you need to get some good rest, make sure that you’re eating properly so that you can be the best version of yourself when you take the test” Simmons said.
People have different feelings about taking tests, especially big tests, and many people have their different feelings about the SAT, but how do the 11th grade Lawrence North students feel about taking it?
“Honestly, I’m not worried about it, because I’ve practiced the SAT all three years, freshman, sophomore, and this year, so I’m not too stressed about it,” Junior Aryea Gowdy said.
Students use a number of ways to study, finding what study tactics work best for them.
“I’m studying in class, we just did the practice exam for the SAT on BlueBook, and I’m just studying all the information I have,” Junior Aryea Gowdy said.
“I am going home each day working out and also working on work I can do and studying,” Junior Jashaun Board said.
11th grade students can find the classroom assignments for SAT day the day of in the commons area on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors in the new building areas. 11th grade students who are late to their testing class will not be able to enter their classrooms once the test starts. Unless the early release form is filled out by Monday, March 2nd, students will have to attend the whole day. Lastly make sure to bring a Chromebook, charger, pencil, and approved calculator, if unsure if the calculator is approved, see the list at CollegeBoard.com.
