Travel group prepares for trip to Italy

AP history teacher, Rachel Couch, takes students on a trip every year to a new and exotic places around the world. This year, the destination is Italy where she and a group of students will visit five of its famous cities.

“We’re flying into Milan, and then we’re going to Venice, to Florence, to Rome, and then to Sorrento and visiting the Island of Capri and also get to see Mount. Vesuvius,” Couch said.

The Italy trip is scheduled for June 19 to the 29, but Couch states that it could change in order ‘to coordinate with other schools’. In order to reduce the cost for students, schools often times share buses with other schools in order to fill up all the seats on the buses.

“Usually, they will try to pair a couple of school to fill up the bus to make it more affordable for students. So we won’t know until close to the dates to see how many students we have, how many students another school could be, any school around the country, but it will be around June 19,” Couch said.

Couch hopes to get 15 to 20 students to go on the trip as done in past years, but the cost of trip is around $3,600. Although it’s a bit pricey, Couch believes that it’s worth every penny.

“Includes air fare, hotels, meals, tour guide, coach bus, admission into all activities we see. We don’t stand in line, we have a bus that takes us to diff places. We’re visiting five different cities in Italy, which is the most expensive and widely toured place in Europe and the world,” Couch said.

On the trip, students will stay two to three days per city. In the evening, those on the trip will be able to visit small attractions in separate groups, but will stay together when visiting museums, architecture, historical monuments, etc. Couch believes that the trip is beneficial for anyone who goes on it.

“They’ll get to see the Sistine Chapel, they’ll get to see Vatican City. Not only that, the art, history. I think there’s something for everybody, whether you like archeology, whether you like people watching, if you like fashion, if you like to eat. I think there’s something there for everybody,” Couch said.

Although the Italy trip is expensive, it’s certainly a memorable and educational experience for those interested and fascinated by history or for those who simply want to visit other lands and experience foreign cultures.
