Returning girls golf head coach looks to capitalize on young talent: Season Preview
Outside of girl’s golf, high school athletics regular season games and matches are set to begin Aug. 14. Before then, North Star will preview each of the Lawrence North fall sports teams. Girls golf is our next highlighted team.
The 2017 IHSAA Girls golf season has already been in progress over the last few weeks. Unlike the rest of the fall sports, girls golf officially got underway on July 31st before the commencement of the 2016-17 MSDLT academic year. Head Coach Tom Ferry has once again grabbed the reigns of the girls golf program after the departure of Greg Wischmann during the off-season. Ferry previously held the same position before Wischmann accepted the LN job for the for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
Gone from the 2016 squad is Abby Wischmann, now a freshman at St. Xavier, who led the program for multiple seasons during her career. The team is now headed by sophomore Caroline Salvas who posted an LN low score of 90 at the Lawrence Central Invite on July 31st. Salvas also posted an LN low score of 43 in nine holes against Ben Davis and LC.
“She’s really been a tremendous player for us so far this season,” Ferry said. “She’s already been at the level that Abby [Wischmann] was at and has been posting some similar scores.”
Although Salvas has turned heads in early matches of the 2017 season, a priority for Ferry is bettering the scores at the back end of the roster.
‘If we could improve our 3rd and 4th scorers that would help our team tremendously as a whole because that would affect our team scores.”
Senior GiGi Rowland seems to have a stranglehold on the number two spot for the Wildcats while juniors Hannah Chenevert and Natalie Beyfuss round out players to watch for the Wildcats during the 2017 campaign.
