North Star takes a look through the archives in the weekly edition of the North Star Time Capsule. This week we take a look back at the 2003 school year when the LN Regime was named the Operation Football band of the week.

On Sept. 12 the Lawrence North Regime was named Operation Football’s band of the week. Operation Football, program that airs on channel 13, provides viewers with scores of high school football games throughout the state, shows extended highlights of selected games and features a marching band and a cheer leading squad each week.

Sometimes all the attention is focused on the football teams, and the marching bands that perform every week as well get left in the dust. Operation Football is aiding in putting an end to this inequity.

“Band people put in a lot of hours, just like football players do,” said sportscaster Dave Calabro, who is in charge of and plays an integral role in Operation Football. “They often go unnoticed.”

The LN marching band was chosen to perform as a Band of the Week because of telephone calls that the WTHR station received from people who remarked on how talented the LN Marching Regime is.

“We got recognition for the hard work we’ve done,’ said junior drum major James Lee.’I think it boosted our confidence as an entire band and it made us realize our hard work does pay off.”

Many people do not realize everything that is involved in being part of the marching band. It’s not  all about performing a show during halftime of a football game. The Regime takes part in several competitions throughout the school year.

“I think we really deserved it; we’ve worked really hard,” said freshman Regime member Kara Warmke. “I think it really boosted our spirits. we had a contest this weekend; it made us ready for that.”

Last Saturday, the Regime traveled to Louisville to compete in the bands of America Regional, where they placed fifth out of 29 marching bands.

It’s cool and it’s an honor [to be named Band of the Week], but in the long run, it doesn’t really matter,” said drum major Faye Parmer. “Competition is what matters.”
