Sophomore’s essay leads to scholarship

On Aug. 29 sophomore Amairani Beltran received the Excellence in Summer Service Education award. She was chosen out of over more than 60 other students to receive this award through submission of an essay. Beltran at first did not believe she would win on account of submission entry complications, but was thrilled when she learned the news that she had won, and was excited to win her prize money of $1000.

North Star: Did you think you would win the award?
Beltran: I didn’t think I was going to get the award, and then I got it and was excited.
NS: Why did  you get the award?
Beltran: I wrote an essay about what I did over the summer, which was making a documentary.
NS: How did you find out about the award?
Beltran: My mentor in the program I was in [Campecine Youth Academy] taught me everything I need to know and he told me about the award.
